He was very proud to be an enlisted man and actually got in a little trouble after he was given his battlefield commission and refused to don the butter bars. As such, I made sure his memorial tile listed his rank as "Master Sergeant." He'd have preferred it that way.

Still miss you, Pops.

Nice tribute. Curious why he did not wear his bar? My dad served on the USS Portland and was at sea with the USS Lexington task force when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

To all the soldiers and sailors, Thanks For Serving.

Well, he finally did and was promoted again before he shipped home so he actually got out as a Captain. He simply came from a long line of E-men, the last officer in the family being a general in the Civil War (Braxton Bragg), and felt more connected to them. It was also a step down (in his eyes) to go from a Master Sergeant, who get tons of respect, to a butter-bar Lieutenant, who typically don't.

So wait. Your family has an entire Fort named after them? Awesome! It must be a huge honor. As for your dad, he seems like a really great man. Was he out before Vietnam?

Well, not so much my family as one guy in it but, yeah. ;) Fort Bragg in NoCal was also named after Braxton. My dad was in the California National Guard. His unit got activated and served for a 2-years in the Korean Conflict and then came home.
